Committee hears update on WSU STEM programs

With the Legislature back in town this week for Legislative Committee Days, the House Appropriations Committee Thursday received an overview of WSU’s engineering and computer science programs and an update on how WSU is working to meet Washington’s needs in these high demand fields.

The Committee learned about the growth in WSU programs offered across Washington state, viewing the map below which illustrates engineering and computer science offerings on the main Pullman campus, the Tri-Cities and Vancouver branch campuses and satellite locations in Bremerton at Olympic College and in Everett at the University Center of North Puget Sound.

Engineering and computer science programs across the state

The Legislature last session directed $2.85 million annually to WSU to bolster STEM degree programs. This new investment will allow WSU to enroll 228 more students per year and produce an additional 104 degrees per year at full maturity. The focus of this new funding will be on computer science and mechanical, electrical and civil engineering degree programs.

Check out video of WSU’s full presentation to the Committee below, detailing surging enrollment and degree production, best practices for growing and retaining STEM enrollments and the future launch of a new electrical engineering program at the University Center of North Puget Sound.
