State NIL bill clears Senate committee

A bill that would provide clarity necessary for certain university employees to advise and support student athletes pursuing activities that include their name, image and likeness advanced out of committee today with a unanimous vote.

SB 5913 was heard earlier this week in the Senate State Government & Tribal Relations committee, where WSU testified in support alongside colleagues from the other research university in the state. “The bill clarifies that university personnel would be permitted to go beyond providing the high level of educational awareness that we’re already able to do and moves towards specific counseling on the actual NIL opportunities” shared WSU’s Director of State Relations, Chris Mulick.

You can watch the committee vote below. The bill now advances to the Senate Rules committee, where it awaits a pull to the floor in order to be voted on by the entire Senate chamber.
