Governor signs bill extending state financial aid program eligibility

A bill that would increase the amount of time a student is eligible to receive state financial aid was signed by Gov. Jay Inslee today. It increases the eligibility window for programs like the Washington College Grant from five years to six years.

Sen. T’wina Nobles, chair of the Senate Higher Education committee, sponsored SB 5904 which also extends eligibility for the state’s College Bound Scholarship and Passport to Career programs. This effort aligns the state’s financial aid programs with the federal Pell Grant.

The Council of Presidents, an association that represents WSU along with the state’s other five public universities and college, and the ASWSU student government supported the bill through the 60-day session that adjourned Sine Die on March 7th.

With the governor’s signature, the bill takes effect on June 5th, 2024.
