Bill would allow WSU to provide health insurance to student athletes

WSU signaled its support last week for a bill that would allow public universities in Washington to provide health insurance for student athletes.

Senate Bill 5158 was introduced at the request of WSU and the University of Washington to help cuts costs in athletic departments. A companion bill, House Bill 1298, has been introduced in the lower chamber and is scheduled to be heard Wednesday.

With narrow exceptions, state law prohibits universities from covering the cost of health care premiums for students. WSU currently pays out of pocket costs for needed surgeries and other services. It is believed providing health insurance would be more cost effective over the long term.

Bills need to be heard and moved out of their policy committees by Feb. 21. You can view this week’s testimony below.
