WSU biology in space takes center stage in D.C.

WSU’s own Professor Laura Bartley showcased her research in Washington, D.C. this week at The Science Coalition‘s “Science of Space”— an event highlighting exciting space-related research happening at universities across the country.

Dr. Bartley shared her work on BioS-ENDURES (Biology in Space: Establishing Networks for DUrable and REsilient Systems), a NASA-funded partnership between WSU, the University of Washington, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The consortium is exploring how living organisms respond to space environments—knowledge that will be key as humans push farther into deep space.

While in D.C., Dr. Bartley also connected with policymakers who shape the nation’s space and research agenda. She spoke with Representative Valerie Foushee, Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, and met with Representative Dan Newhouse, along with staff from Senator Patty Murray, Representative Michael Baumgartner, and Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. She also visited teams from the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, Senate Appropriations Committee, and House Appropriations Committee to talk about WSU’s growing leadership in space biology.

A great week for WSU science—and another step forward in contributing to the future of space exploration.
