21 hill visits for President Cantwell

WSU President Elizabeth Cantwell spent the better part of three days advocating for the university’s priorities with state lawmakers in Olympia during the first week of the 2026 legislative session.

Conversations with legislators centered squarely on the collective budget challenges facing the university and the state. WSU has eliminated $52 million from its annual operating budget over the last four years to account for softening enrollments and reductions in state appropriation for institutional support and compensation. The state is also grappling with a $2+ billion deficit this legislative session as the result of spending outpacing tax collections.

During the meetings President Cantwell emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring resources are aligned with programs that deliver the greatest impact for students, advocating that lawmakers provide for flexibility to make decisions locally as the university adapts with purpose.

The Legislature convened Monday, January 12th for the 2026 legislative session that is set to adjourn March 12th.
