WSU Tri-Cities recently welcomed Mike Gentile, Democratic Clerk for the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, for a visit highlighting the impact of federal investments on healthcare education, student success, and workforce development across the region.
The visit began at the WSU Tri-Cities Nursing Building, where Christina Chacon, Academic Director for the WSU Tri-Cities College of Nursing, highlighted undergraduate and graduate nursing programs that are helping address healthcare workforce shortages in Washington. Discussions focused on expanding enrollment, meeting regional clinical workforce needs, preparing future nursing faculty, and the importance of partnerships with local healthcare providers. Gentile also toured the facility and learned how simulation technology and hands-on training prepare students for healthcare careers.
Gentile then met with Zach Harper, Senior Project Manager; Alondra Castaneda, TRIO Director; and TRIO scholars to learn how federally funded TRIO services support student success by improving access, retention, and graduation outcomes for first-generation, low-income, and other eligible students. TRIO Scholars shared their compelling educational journeys and how the TRIO program provides academic community, dynamic mentorship, undergraduate research opportunities, and tailored graduate school and career preparation.

The visit concluded with a discussion of Cougar Tracks, WSU Tri-Cities’ workforce development initiative. Kate McAteer, Senior Associate Vice President and Vice Provost, highlighted how the program delivers upskilling and reskilling opportunities while connecting students and working professionals with experiential learning opportunities and industry partnerships that support career readiness and employment outcomes.
The visit demonstrated WSU Tri-Cities’ role in expanding educational opportunities, strengthening the healthcare workforce, and supporting regional economic development through innovative programs and strategic federal investments.
