Senate budget contains no cuts for higher education

Leaders in the state Senate this morning unveiled a budget proposal that closes the state’s budget shortfall while holding education and higher education harmless.

“Senate lawmakers have shown a profound commitment to higher education with this budget,” said WSU President Elson S. Floyd. “By preserving higher education, they are to be commended for investing in our students, supporting our state’s employers and committing to research that bolsters our overall economy.”

You can find the budget documents here. The proposal is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Ways and Means Committee at 5:30 this afternoon.

Both chambers of the Legislature have now introduced separate proposals. You can read about the House proposal here. Both chambers will have to reconcile their differences before sending a joint proposal to the governor’s desk.

“There is still much work to do in bringing the House and the Senate budgets together,” said Floyd. “We are hopeful we can carry this renewed commitment to higher education all the way to the governor’s desk for her final signature.”
