Time to look forward for higher education

Washington State University President Elson Floyd, in a column published Sunday in the Everett Herald, heralded higher education’s “watershed year” in Olympia and said that it’s time to move on from the reset that has occurred over the past five years.

“What’s done is done,” he wrote. You can find the column here.

In it, he assesses the damage of that reset, including major budget reductions and significant increases in student tuition, and applauds the Legislature for stopping the decline this year.

“There is reason to hope the worst may be behind us. In addition to sparing higher education from further cuts in 2012, the Legislature left whole the financial aid programs that support our students.  It is a remarkable – even stunning – achievement considering the very difficult budgetary challenges legislators faced when the session began in early January,” said President Floyd.
