Senate Dems say halt tuition, reinvest in higher ed

In a press conference Tuesday, Senate Democrats proposed a plan to freeze tuition for two years and shift back to a 50/50 funding model that would split the cost to attend college evenly between state support and tuition.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has the story here.

Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, is the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 5420 which would create a two-year freeze on tuition rates at four-year institutions of higher education, echoing the proposal put forth to the Legislature by Washington’s six public baccalaureate presidents.

This legislation would also establish an incentive program that would award more money to universities and colleges that deliver improvements in such areas as the number of degrees awarded, the time to complete degrees, and maintaining affordable tuition. A task force would be formed to review this funding model.
