House unveils updated budget plan

Leaders in the state House of Representatives this afternoon rolled out an updated operating budget proposal and a separate revenue bill just days before the end of the Legislature’s first special session.

Details about the budget can be found here. Details about the revenue bill, House Bill 2034, can be found here.

The budget proposal is quite similar to the one House leaders introduced earlier in session but reduced funding for medical education expansion in Spokane and lowered tuition assumptions, authorizing increases of 3 percent for each of the next two years.

The revenue bill, funded by the closure or narrowing of seven tax exemptions, backfills a $5 million hole in the university’s maintenance level budget while providing $17.6 million in new funding for engineering and computer science enrollments.

The Legislature’s first special session ends Tuesday. The 2013-15 biennium begins July 1.
