Compromise budget makes serious investment in higher education

The compromise operating budget posted online late Thursday night and expected to be approved by both the state House and Senate today makes larger reinvestments in higher education than any proposed before.

The budget fully funds WSU’s maintenance level budget and freezes resident undergraduate tuition by providing $15 million in new state funding.

It further provides $6 million to permanently expand medical education activities at WSU’s Spokane campus and provides suitable funding to expand programs at the University Center of North Puget Sound in the fall of 2014.

You can read WSU President Elson Floyd’s statement on the budget here.

Besides approving an operating budget, the Legislature also must approve a two-year capital budget before it can adjourn for the year.
