Real Hope Act sent to governor

The House of Representatives on Tuesday gave final approval to a measure that will provide access to the State Need Grant to undocumented students.

The bill now goes to the governor’s desk for signature.

Senate Bill 6523 — dubbed the Real Hope Act — was approved 75-22. You can read the Seattle Times coverage here. It’s similar to a version previously approved by the House known as the Dream Act.

The primary difference is the Senate version commits $5 million to help fund the expansion of the pool of students eligible for the Need Grant. The program is underfunded as is. Some 32,000 students are eligible to receive the Need Grant but don’t receive benefits.
