WSU Brings Cougar Spirit to the Hill—One Scoop at a Time

Washington State University helped sweeten the conversation in Washington, D.C. this week, serving up a taste of the Palouse at a well-attended policy and networking event hosted by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

APLU’s “Scoops for Science” event featured university creameries from across the country. From the moment doors opened, the WSU table drew a steady stream of attendees eager to connect—and indulge. Featuring the university’s iconic Cougar Gold cheese alongside crowd-favorite Huckleberry Ripple ice cream, the display from WSU Creamery offered more than refreshments; it delivered a distinctive Cougar experience rooted in tradition, innovation, and community.

The highlight of the evening came when Representative Michael Baumgartner joined WSU’s own Jake Dowd and Mike Bauduy behind the table to scoop ice cream and greet guests.

Throughout the event, conversations ranged from higher education priorities and agricultural innovation to workforce development—issues where Washington State University continues to play a leading role. The approachable setting helped foster meaningful exchanges, with Cougar Gold and ice cream serving as effective icebreakers for policymakers, staff, and stakeholders alike.

Safely delivering ice cream across the country is no small feat. Thank you to the WSU Creamery Director and staff and the administrative staff in CAHNRS and EAGR who helped make this event possible.

Events like these reinforce WSU’s commitment to sharing its story—highlighting the university’s research impact, student success, and contributions to communities across Washington and beyond.
